Arnaud Delorme, PhD, has been studying human consciousness for the last 20 years. He is a neuroscientist at IONS, a CNRS Research Director in Toulouse, France, and a senior Research Scientist at the University of California, San Diego. He completed his PhD in 2000 on visual categorization in humans, monkeys, and machines, then joined the Salk Institute for a postdoc in Terry Sejnowski and Francis Crick’s laboratory, where he focused on statistical analysis of EEG signals during cognitive tasks. He developed the free EEGLAB software for advanced EEG analysis in collaboration with Scott Makeig, now one of the most widely used tools in the field. His contributions were recognized with a Brettencourt Schueller young investigator award and a 10 year anniversary ANT young investigator award.

He has a strong interest in the scientific study of consciousness and spirituality. A long time Zen meditator, he has taught in India on the neural correlates of conscious experience in a Master’s program at the Birla Institute of Technology. Since 2002, he has investigated brain dynamics associated with extraordinary states of consciousness, including meditation, psychoactive agents, and mediumship. The author of more than 160 publications, he is known for research on mediumship that has drawn wide attention, with his paper on evidential mediumship ranking among the top 1 percent of articles viewed on ResearchGate. His work argues that mediumship merits rigorous scientific study. He is also the author of “Why Our Minds Wander: Understand the Science and Learn to Focus Your Thoughts” and is currently examining how technologies such as multi channel neurofeedback can support meditation practice.
