Chayan Kanti Nandi is Professor in Physical Chemistry in the School of Chemical Sciences IIT Mandi since 2020. He completed his PhD from IIT Kanpur in 2006 and moved to Frankfurt, Germany in 2006 as an Alexander von Humboldt (AvH) fellow and then went to Princeton University in 2009 before joining IIT Mandi as an assistant Professor in 2010.

His main research focus is on the interdisciplinary area of Chemistry, Physics and Biology. He works on Single Molecule Spectroscopy (SMS) and Super Resolution Microscopy (SRM) to understand the various cellular dynamics in living cells. Using the SMS and SRM imaging techniques, he is delving into understanding the hierarchical model of different organelles in plants upon anaesthesia treatment in connection to origin of life at cellular level.  Using C. elegans as a living model system, he is also trying to understand the embryogenic evolution of sensory perception. He is also extensively involved in designing materials for room temperature single photon emissions for quantum technology.

Due to his outstanding contribution Chemical Research Society of India (CRSI) awarded him the CSRI bronze medal in 2019. He has been awarded the prestigious Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC) in 2024 and the fellow of Indian Chemical Society (FICS) in 2024 and Alexander von Humboldt Fellow (AvH), He is also currently serving as the Guest Editor for Chemistry-An Asian Journal, Chemistry of Nano Materials and European journal of Organic Chemistry. He served as Associate Dean Research and Dean of Resource Generation and Alumni Relations (DORA) at IIT Mandi.
