NIROSHA J. MURUGAN   PhD
Image
Nirosha Murugan

I am a recently appointed Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Biophysics from Algoma University, where I started my academic appointment as assistant professor in the Department of Biology. Prior to my time at AU and transitioning to Wilfrid Laurier University as Faculty of Science Research Chair and assistant professor of Health Sciences, I completed an NSERC-funded PhD in Biomolecular Sciences from Laurentian University. I was then recruited to the Allen Discovery Center at Tufts University as a postdoctoral fellow, where I developed a successful research program grounded in regenerative biology and in comparative cognition with Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University for over 3 years. It was during this time where I also was a teaching fellow at Harvard University in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology.

Research Interests / Ongoing Projects:  Combating any pathological state requires comprehensive and the integration of interdisciplinary models of cellular communication. Just as chemicals instruct cells to divide, grow, and specialize to form organisms, so to do biophysical signals. Mechanical, optical/magnetic, and electrical signals are pervasive in the cell’s microenvironment but are only now being recognized as determinants of cell fate and plasticity. My lab adopts a top-down approach to understand the biophysical language of cellular communication toward transformative breakthroughs in human disease. Specifically, combining state-of-the-art techniques from several fields including neuroscience, regenerative medicine, and cancer biology, my research investigates how cancer cell fate can be re-programmed by modulating tissue microenvironments, reverting cells to healthy states. Along with this, my lab investigates the mutual relationships between cancers, their microenvironments, and distant organ systems such as the brain which express cancer-related alterations of function including neurocognitive impairment.  -  Nirosha Murugan Lab   -             Research / Areas of Expertise: tissue biophysics, electromagnetic biology; quantum biology; stem cell and regenerative medicine; cancer biology

About Us
The Science of CONSCIOUSNESS  Conferences - since 1994
The Science of Consciousness ('TSC') is an interdisciplinary conference emphasizing rigorous approaches to the study of consciousness and its place in the universe. Topical areas include neuroscience, philosophy, psychology, cognitive science, biology, quantum physics and quantum brain biology, cosmology, meditation, altered states, artificial intelligence/machine consciousness, the nature of reality, culture and experiential phenomenology.
Held annually since 1994, the TSC conference is now hosted by The Arizona Astrobiology Center, University of Arizona, and alternates yearly between Tucson, Arizona and held at various locations in Italy, Denmark, Japan, Sweden, Czech Republic, Hungary, Hong Kong, India, Finland, San Diego, Switzerland and Barcelona. The 32nd annual TSC will be held April 6-11, 2026, in Tucson Arizona. The conference is planned for in-person participation with online livestreaming. Live participation and broadcast will take place at the Loews Ventana Canyon Resort, a beautiful eco-lodge in the hills above Tucson, Arizona.
Tucson TSC conferences consist of keynote, plenary and concurrent talks, posters, exhibits, workshops and social events. A welcome reception/dinner, poster session refreshments, optional dinner and end of conference (poetry slam) party are planned. The hotel provides daily free hikes, stargazing, tennis, pickleball, gym, spa offerings as designated times to be announced. We hope for a robust in-person audience and will update and finalize conditions and participation mode in early 2026. AABC is pleased to announce that Dr. Stuart Hameroff, a world leader in consciousness studies, is now with AABC as a Senior Scientist.
The Arizona Astrobiology Center
https://astrobiology.arizona.edu/person/stuart-hameroff
Beyond the intriguing interdisciplinary questions aimed at understanding the biology, physics, and chemistry of how consciousness operates, consciousness science connects to astrobiology’s themes of studying the past, present, and future of life in the cosmos. We hope to explore when consciousness arose during the origins of life on our planet alongside themes of how consciousness might transcend organisms and humanity. (More about Dr. Hameroff ->)
Alongside these research efforts, AABC is proud to also now support the The Science of Consciousness Conference. giving page

NEW HORIZONS
ASTROBIOLOGY and Consciousness Research
The Science of CONSCIOUSNESS Conferences since 1994
The Science of Consciousness (‘TSC’) conference is the world’s longest running inter-disciplinary conference on rigorous approaches to all aspects of the study and understanding off consciousness, the nature of existence and our place in the universe. TSC emphasizes broad and rigorous approaches to all aspects of the study and understanding of consciousness. Topical areas include neuroscience, philosophy, psychology, biology, quantum physics, astrobiology, cosmology, meditation and altered states, AI/machine consciousness, culture and experiential phenomenology.  TSC has alternated yearly since 1994 between Tucson, Arizona USA and elsewhere including Italy, Denmark, Japan, Sweden, Czech Republic, Hungary, Hong Kong, India, California, Switzerland, Finland, and Taormina, on the island of Sicily and Barcelona, Spain (July 6-11). The 2026 TSC returns to Tucson and the breathtaking Loews Ventana Canyon Resort - the perfect spot to continue the dialogue and understanding of consciousness
We face a crossroads in the age-old study of consciousness. Over the past thirty-two years approaches to understanding consciousness have diverged along two distinct paths: 1) ‘neurocomputational’ views of the brain as a complex computer of simple neurons, a view compatible with AI systems becoming conscious, and 2) ‘funda-mental’ views in which consciousness is intrinsic to the universe, connected to the brain through quantum biology. Exploring the funda-mental view, TSC embraces neuroscience biology far more rigorously than AI-compatible simple neurons. Ironically, conscious AI may be most likely to occur in biomimetic quantum computers.

Bennu holds the solar system's 'original ingredients,' might have been part of a wet world - Mikayla Mace Kelley, UA News, June 26, 2024
OSIRIS-REx sample scientists took a deep dive into the rocks and dust returned from asteroid Bennu. They found that the sample is rich in carbon, nitrogen and organic compounds – essential components for life as we know it.

"Finally having the opportunity to delve into the OSIRIS-REx sample from Bennu after all these years is incredibly exciting," said Dante Lauretta, principal investigator for OSIRIS-REx and Regents Professor of planetary sciences in the University of Arizona Lunar and Planetary Laboratory. "This breakthrough not only answers longstanding questions about the early solar system but also opens new avenues of inquiry into the formation of Earth as a habitable planet. The insights outlined in our overview paper have sparked further curiosity, driving our eagerness to explore deeper."  More

With Oxford Nobel Laureate, Sir Roger Penrose, he has proposed consciousness depends on quantum processes in microtubules, protein polymers inside brain neurons, connected to fluctuations in the fine scale structure of the universe. Hameroff has speculated consciousness precedes and persists after life, entangled in spacetime geometry

Consciousness came before life
The fundamental cause of evolution.
Hameroff, S. (2024, May 08). Consciousness came before life. IAI News. /articles/life-and-consciousness-what-are-they-auid-2836
Most scientists and philosophers believe that life came before consciousness. Life appeared on Earth about 3.8 billion years ago; consciousness and feelings, it’s said, evolved later due to complex biological information processing, perhaps only recently in brains with language and tool-making abilities. In fact, though, there’s good reason to think that consciousness preceded life, and was central to making life and evolution possible. More

Many scientists, operating with a materialist worldview, argue that consciousness emerges out of inanimate molecules. In contrast, Roger Penrose's longtime collaborator, Stuart Hameroff, puts forward the controversial case that consciousness precedes life and that we have evidence for this from a recent NASA experiment.

CONFERENCE CHAIRS - TSC 2024
STUART HAMEROFF
Image
Hameroff
Stuart Hameroff  Co-Founder, Co-chair, The Science of Consciousness Conference; Professor Emeritus, Departments of Anesthesiology and Psychology, U of Arizona, Stuart Hameroff MD is a clinical anesthesiologist and researcher on how the brain produces consciousness, and how anesthetics act to erase it. In medical school in the early 1970s, Hameroff became interested in consciousness, and in protein structures called microtubules inside brain neurons which he came to believe processed information supporting consciousness. In the mid- 1990s he teamed with Sir Roger Penrose to develop the controversial ‘Orch OR’ theory in which consciousness derives from “orchestrated” (“Orch”) microtubule quantum vibrations linked to processes in spacetime geometry, the fine scale structure of the universe, leading to “Penrose objective reduction” (“OR”, hence “Orch OR”). And he has further proposed the ‘microtubule quantum vibration’ theory of anesthetic action. Hameroff organizes the well-known conference series ‘The Science of Consciousness’, has written or edited 5 books and over a hundred scientific articles, and appeared in films and various TV shows about consciousness. With University of Arizona colleagues Jay Sanguinetti, John JB Allen and Shinzen Young, Hameroff is developing transcranial ultrasound (‘TUS’) for treatment of mental and cognitive dysfunction (TUS may resonate endogenous megahertz vibrations in brain microtubules). Penrose- Hameroff Orch OR is one of a group of major theories of consciousness in the Templeton World Charity Foundation project  ‘Accelerating Research on Consciousness’ and is currently being tested experimentally. The Origin of Consciousness Studies at the University of Arizona
The age-old study of consciousness fell into disfavor in behaviorist-oriented psychology during most of the 20th century. In the late 1980s, popular books by notable scientists including Francis Crick and Roger Penrose revived interest, and in 1994 the first interdisciplinary conference on the topic was held at the University of Arizona, organized by Professors Stuart Hameroff in Anesthesiology, Al Kaszniak in Psychology, Alwyn Scott in Mathematics, and Jim Laukes in Extended UA.  A highlight was a talk by then-unknown philosopher David Chalmers. "The first morning was philosophy; the first two talks were really boring and the audience grew restless. Then Chalmers took the stage with shoulder-length hair, strutting like Mick Jagger," recalled Hameroff, professor emeritus in the Departments of Anesthesiology and Psychology.  "Chalmers talked about how problems like memory, learning, attention, and behavior were relatively easy compared to the really 'hard problem' of how and why we have conscious experience," Hameroff said. "We could have been nonconscious, robot-like 'zombies' with behavior but no inner life. How and why do we have feelings and awareness? That was the 'hard problem.”  "The audience buzzed” Hameroff said. “At that moment, we knew why we were there."
The 1994 conference spurred broad interest. "We hadn't considered a follow-up conference," recalls Hameroff, "but there was great demand for an interdisciplinary approach.”  The Center for Consciousness Studies was formally created by the Arizona Board of Regents in 1998 with a grant from the Fetzer Institute, and Chalmers soon returned to join the UArizona Department of Philosophy and serve as the second CCS director, taking over from Al Kaszniak. CCS was housed in the Department of Psychology, which at the time was in the College of SBS. When Chalmers left the UA five years later, Hameroff became CCS director, hired Abi Behar-Montefiore as assistant director, and moved CCS to the Department of Anesthesiology in the College of Medicine. In her 18 years, Abi has skillfully managed CCS, its conferences and research, and helped establish a community among conference participants.  In 2019, CCS returned to the College of SBS where a minor in consciousness studies was established.
2025 The Science of Consciousness Conference is now under the auspices of AABC Arizona Astrobiology Center.

The Tucson Conferences - Biennial
Since 1994, the biennial series "Toward a Science of Consciousness" conferences are a landmark of international, interdisciplinary events sponsored by the University of Arizona devoted entirely to unlocking the mysteries of consciousness. They have explored the whole spectrum of approaches from philosophy of mind and cognitive science, to neurobiology, pharmacology, and molecular dynamics, phenomenological accounts, and physics. The aim is to lay a sound scientific foundation for future research.
