George Ellis, FRS, is a specialist in general relativity theory and cosmology who  co-authored The Large Scale Structure of Space-Time with Stephen Hawking. He is Professor Emeritus of Applied Mathematics at the University of Cape Town, and has been visiting Professor at the University of Texas, University of Chicago, Hamburg University, Boston University, University of Alberta, and London University, as well as Professor at The International School of Advanced Studies, Trieste. He has recently become interested in the emergence of complexity from physics, and his book How Can Physics Underlie the Mind? Top-Down Causation in the Human Context  (Springer) discusses this issue. His most recent book (with Mark Solms) is Beyond Evolutionary Psychology How and Why Neuropsychological Modules Arise (Cambridge).
